Definition: An eight-digit number assigned by the Federal Agency to an institution for grants and contracts paid by the letter-of-credit method of funding. One letter-of-credit number is assigned by the funding agency for all grants and contracts in their jurisdiction. This number is used as a reference number every time cash is requested from that particular funding agency. It is also used for all cash-related correspondence.
