TO: Human Resource Administrators and Staff Members
FROM: Kathy Irving, Director Employee Labor Relations
SUBJECT: Policy Revisions for Involuntary Terminations
DATE: March 11, 2008

This memorandum is to apprise you of the recent changes that have been made to personnel policies */U205 Re-employment of University Employees and U208 Termination of Employment/*.

It has been our policy to review the eligibility for rehire on a case-by-case basis for persons who have been involuntarily terminated. Effective March 3, 2008, former employees who were involuntarily terminated are not eligible for rehire at the University of Chicago or the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Policy U205 Re-employment of University Employees (Guideline #3) now reads:

“/A staff employee who is involuntary terminated will not be eligible for rehire at the University of Chicago or the University of Chicago Medical Center/.”

Policy U208 Termination of Employment (Guideline #2) has been amended to include the University of Chicago Medical Center and employees who have failed to complete their probationary period. This policy now reads:

“/All involuntary terminations must be approved in advance by ELR. Employees terminated for the following reasons will not be considered for future employment at the University of Chicago or the University of Chicago Medical Center./”

It’s important that we maintain and keep the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Medical Center a strong, viable and competitive workforce. These changes are a means of protecting our image, our reputation, and most importantly, our employees.
